What is the real meaning of Christmas?

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isa 9:6)

Have you ever stopped to think about the real meaning of Christmas?
Much of the world looks at this day as a commercial holiday; a time to buy gifts for each other; a chance for children to sit on Santa’s lap; a time for families to get together around the dinner table. While these traditions are not wrong, is this really what Christmas is all about?

When you look at the world today I’m sure you can agree that there is a lot of evil in it. Switch on the news and you will hear about horrific atrocities committed daily by people around the world. We often look at ourselves and think we are good in comparison to these people however we fail to recognise the sin that lurks within our own heart. “None is righteous. No one does good, not even one.” (Rom. 3:10-18). All of mankind has fallen short of God’s holy standard. Have you ever lied, stolen, used God’s name in vain, hated someone? Due to sin, we are all part of the ultimate statistic, 10 out of 10 people die and we will all face God to give an account before Him. Are you ready for that day?

So what is the true meaning of Christmas? LOVE! God sent his Son to provide the only way for sinners to spend eternity with Him. He took the punishment for our sins. He paid the price in full and we are free from condemnation if we repent of our sin and put our trust in Jesus alone (2 Cor. 5:21). John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
